Leave Me Alone Verse>Chorus

Pat & Mike 'winged' the verse hits. The patterns on Leave Me Alone were formed during 1st 2 runs in the 94 tour rehearsals. How many hits to hit were determined by one of us holding up 1,2,3 or 4 fingers in the air right before the hits.

Hip Intro Quintuplets
There are 5 notes placed inside each 8th beat to give a 'crumbling' effect; hence building scene.

Keep an ear on the guitar/drum locking.

HipSolo 3:7 The section begins with a quntuplet bass drumm fill. During the solo, the china stack hits every 3rd note w/Nuno while the kick remains in 7 4 with Pat.

No Respect end of solo into Outro. The drum fill is played with 1 hand & feet in order not to lose the beat on the hihat. The outro is based in the groove of the whole song.

Hip & Respect were Nuno demos. A couple of takes were done on each by Mike with Nuno playing along. The rest of the parts were formed in the studio. In a short time, 3 songs were ready for Punchline.

Extreme left the 94 European Tour early to get in the studio. Hip Today, Leave Me Alone, and No Respect were recorded while gear was still en route from Europe.

Mike used Nuno's kit, the same used by Paul, for all of Punchline. Leave Me Alone was the only one developed prior to the session as a band. It was written off Mike's 4-limbed-double hihat groove played in the 94 tour rehearsal. The hihats are set up in stereo. One closes while the other is opened. Listening with headphones is required.

Many songs were conceived this way at soundchecks during the 95 Punchline Tour. They are on cassettes that are gone.

The Cherone/Mangini 'accent' connection was formed and is evident on these live recordings. It became a 'thing' that surfaced in every Tribe of Judah song performed live. Using coordination skills to both hit Cherone's accents and not lose the beat is Mike's style. This subtle technique can be noticed once you know it is there. Some songs Mike wrote & recorded during that 8 months are part of his Chix 'n Stix song base. Mike used electronic pads wired into a sound module the was routed through one of Nuno's amp heads to 'play' guitar solos. That was an important discovery for Mike as the Chix 'n Stix solo sections are based on that concept.

The Dauz pads that can be seen in the Rush Tribute Video Clips & Pics, were the ones used in a dressing room of the Punchline tour to record Fine by Me. The entire warm up kit was made up of these pads.

Swollen Princes was recorded at Sound Techniques Studio in Boston; the same used for Punchline & Unconditionally.

There are a LOT of intricate limb patterns that make up these simple sounding drum tracks.

The TOJ drums were meant to sound like a machine playing on real drums. This functional approach really didn't take full effect until the songs were rehearsed and performed. The hits for the studio are absolutely matched to the programmed percussion sounds. It is hard to tell what is what sometimes.

A helmet was needed for safety sake from some of the drum moves. >
