COURSE SYLLABUS/OUTLINE for ROCK REPERTOIRE with MIKE MANGINI
No Required Book.
Weeks 1-3:
Overview the environments associated with the Rock genre takes place in these weeks. Information about them is discussed. They area: traveling, setting up, working with others from band to bartenders, bad lighting, bad sound, guest lists minimum mic’ing, cover bands, original bands and the money associated with each.
Most specifically, Learn and Use the “Block Form” song outlining method to make ½ page song forms.
Organize song in the following grid format:
Use a pencil and regular notebook paper. Title the page, use capital letters to symbolize the intro, music only, verse, pre-chorus, chorus, bridge, extra and solo sections. In the grids below the section heads, write the number of bars each section is in length. Make symbols for stops, entrances, accents and key instruments that may be playing alone. Notate the main beat from all sections, as well as, key fills or figures. Usually, notating the beats at the bottom off the grid and figures within the blocks.
Pick songs already known to students to work with Block Form. Also Get current Hypercane song list (see end of this document.) The student must locate associated music. A minimum of 5 total songs should be completed in a Block Form in by week 4.
Weeks 4-6:
Receive the music for the course associated Hypercane song list.
6 more block forms are required in these weeks.
More discussions on environmental components take place. Performing in Studio and Live situations are specifically incorporated into the student performing in class.
Weeks 7-Midterm:
Block Forms are revamped and rewritten with a Black ink Sharpie. Ink colors, paper size and other components of the method are perfected.
Students play more in class. They must play using another student’s Block Form in order to appreciate how the method works when one does NOT know the song prior to performing it.
The Midterm requires 5 ‘perfect’ Block Forms to be shown to the teacher, and the amount of forms in the student’s notebook are taken into account for grading. They also must perform unaccompanied Blocks of different songs chosen by the teacher in order to demonstrate command of playing a song based on an outline of it.
Weeks 9-12:
Students are responsible for 10 more song forms in these weeks.
More environmental components are discussed. The environment of the Midterm is brought into the discussion. The aspect of ‘nerves’ is discussed and a plan to deal with them is detailed in the class.
The students are to play to another student’s Block Form again.
Weeks 13-Final Exam:
Another 4 songs are due. Previous topics of discussion are reviewed. Success in many environments is discussed. Ways of self-promoting, marketing and manufacturing products is refined. Working with others in all areas becomes a major factor in reviewing the entire semester. Knowledge of each of the environment’s components becomes a major factor in knowing how to relate to others.
The student’s entire notebook is reviewed for a component of the Final exam grade. The student must demonstrate ‘better’ or improved playing with respect to solid time keeping and overall confidence.
